Effects of Ga3 and Ca2+ on barley aleurone protoplasts: a freeze-fracture study

Freeze-fracture electron microscopy was used to study changes in the endomembrane system of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Himalaya) aleurone protoplasts. Protoplasts were used for this study because their response to calcium and the plant hormone gibberellic acid (Ga3) can be monitored prior to rapid freezing of cells for electron microscopy. Protoplasts incubated in Ga3 plus Ca2+ secrete elevated levels of a-amylase relative to cells incubated in Ga3 or Ca2+ alone. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi apparatus of protoplasts incubated in Ga3 plus Ca2+ undergo changes that are well correlated with the synthesis and secretion of a-amylase. The origin of the membranes of autophagic vacuoles (AV) and acquisition of acid phosphatase into AV's were studied in vinblastine-induced autophagocytosis (VBL, 50 mg/kg, i.p.) in mouse hepatocytes. Using unbuffered OsO4, very intense staining was observed in the outer cisternae of the Golgi apparatus and also frequently in the cavity between the double membranes obviously destined to form AV's as well as in the cavity between the double membranes of newly formed AV's. There may occur a transformation process in the membranes limiting an AV analogous to that observed at the Golgi cisternae. Oculoectodermal syndrome: Report of a new case with a broad clinical spectrum

Oculoectodermal syndrome (OMIM 600268) is rare and characterized by aplasia cutis congenita, epibulbar dermoids, and other abnormalities. We report herein on a newly recognized patient with oculoectodermal syndrome, which is the 19th reported patient with OES. The boy aged six years demonstrated a broad clinical spectrum of this condition, including aplasia cutis congenita, epibulbar dermoids, hyperkeratotic papule, mildly enlarged cisterna magna, and an enlarged fluid space in the quadrigeminal cistern, suggesting a cyst. Numerous brain injuries and brain tumors lead to edema in brain tissue which can have consequences for the oxygen supply to the damaged tissue as well as to adjacent tissue areas. In studies made of the blood flow and oxygen supply in perifocal edematous tissue of brain tumors and lesions in patients undergoing various brain operations a direct relationship between the regional blood flow and the water content could be demonstrated (3). Grazie ad approfondite ricerche di archivio e accurate indagini speleologiche, sono stati ispezionati e documentati diversi ipogei artificiali presenti nel comprensorio di Sutera (CL). L’area di Sutera, caratterizzata da affioramenti evaporitici messiniani e non lontana da importanti miniere di salgemma e di zolfo, ha subito una veloce corsa verso la ricerca di minerali pregiati intorno ai primi del ‘900.
